Pompey bounced back into the League 2 play-off positions yesterday with a convincing 3-1 win at Fratton Park against Bristol Rovers.

Gareth Evans set the Blues’ on the way and on-loan striker Michael Smith headed his first of the season just before half-time.

Marc McNulty hit another in the second half before Rovers nabbed a late consolation in front of the Fratton End.

Whilst Pompey are seven points adrift from Oxford United in the last of the automatic promotion spots, there are still 17 matches and 51 points to play for, with plenty of twists and turns likely as the promotion race hots up further.

The next three and a bit of weeks look set to be defining in the quest for promotion with Cambridge at home on 27/2, and five away – Yeovil Town (20/2), Barnet (23/2), Exeter City (1/3) and Accrington Stanley (8/3).

A 15 or even 18 points would be a superb takeaway from those matches and would position Pompey to realistically remain firmly in the hunt for 3rd place.

Mixed fortunes wouldn’t be disastrous, as Pompey under Paul Cook seek to deliver success for the Blues’ fans with League 1 football next season being the aim – keep May 30th free!
